Nikon D90 Review

The Nikon D90 was the second digital SLR camera I bought. The first being the Nikon D40. I bought the D90 for the following reasons.

  • I already had Nikon lenses
  • I needed more control of my photography

The D90 replaces the older Nikon D80 and it is one amazing camera. It was released in October of 2008 so it is just about 4 months old as of this writing.

Here are some quick technical specifications that sold me on this camera:

  • 12.9 megapixel camera; 4288×2848 pixel images in L size
  • ISO 100-6400
  • 11-point AF
  • 3.0″, ,000 pixel LCD

The Nikon D90 Is For…

Those who are serious about their photography and want to step it up a notch.

When released over two years back, the D80 was intended for the intermediate and enthusiast crowd. The Nikon D90 is the obvious replacement and updates and obsoletes the D80.

One thing that I found limiting about the D40 was that it only had 3 autofocus sensors. This was pretty good for most uses in landscape mode but it was a pain when in portrait mode.

The D90 has 11 AF sensors which provides with a great range of focus points to choose from.

As a photographer who is mainly shooting people, my camera is mostly in portrait orientation. The extra AF points are a very big help because there is no need to focus and reframe.

The D90 is a bigger camera and it has a bit more “oomph” than any previous models. It has a large, crisp 3.0″ LCD screen that provides beautiful playback!

The following photo is an example of the kind of image that can be taken with the camera. This photo was originally shot in RAW and slightly processed in Adobe Lightroom 2.0 (exposure adjustments only).

Summary

The D90 is a fabulous camera! I love shooting bringing out this camera wherever I am. I love the way it feels in my hand and I love how responsive the camera is. It is heavier than a D40 but it more than makes up for it with all the other improvements.

This camera will work with all Nikon Lenses including AF, AF-I, AF-D and AF-S lenses.

When shooting with this camera, I feel like a professional photographer; I have more confidence and it shows!
