It is hard to create a unique, yet memorable family photo because a lot of times, these are done at grandma’s birthday party or Uncle Vinny’s BBQ.
Of course, that is not to say that these are bad locations or settings but most people don’t think about what the photo is intended to convey before taking the photo.
Natural Settings
A creative photographer, such as yourself, should take opportunities to make use of your environment and surroundings to create, unique looks. This may mean taking your group outdoors, to the park, to the beach or wherever a good photo opportunity may arise.
Natural settings are a bit more difficult because there can be a lot of distractions around the family. For example, traffic, other people, other colors and so on.
If this is the case, try to minimize distractions by coming in for a tight shot of the family. If, in the final photo, you cut off tops of heads, it may be OK.
Otherwise, you may wish to incorporate the scenery into your photo like having a family stand beside a tree or under overhanging leaves.
These will create a natural border and will cause the viewer to be drawn to the faces in the photo.
Add a Family Pet
Some family portrait tips for your next shoot would be to incorporate the family pet into the scene.
Sometimes this may be hard if the family has a boisterous and playful dog! You won’t be able to get the pet into the photo!
With a bit of patience and some treats, you will be able to do so and the result will be amazing.
