Sony A55 Camera
Sony A55 – This is Sony’s most recent introduction of the interchangeable lens cameras. As part of revamping the major technological foundations, the SLT Alpha A33 and A55 represent a new standard for the digital camera industry.
Sony A55
Unlike a traditional dSLR, the Sony A55 represents a newer hybrid form of a compact digicam with an interchangeable lens. This is NOT a Single Lens Reflex camera like the Sony Alpha 900 but a hybrid model.
I am writing a review of these kinds of cameras because they represent a mid-step between the point-and-shoot cameras and a full-fledged dSLR camera.
What we have here with the Sony A55 is something called a “Translucent Mirror Technology”. This is not the same mirrors found in other dSLR cameras due to the size of this body.

So why would you want to get a hybrid camera like the Sony A55? Well, here are a few reviews that may help you out when deciding on the Sony A55:)
I looked at DSLRs but they are so big, so expensive, and so heavy that I shied away from them.
Recently several micro four-thirds size sensor cameras came on the market, all using a new set of lenses, but I wasn’t impressed with them. I thought if the sensor had been the biggest problem in my FZ30 I didn’t want just a step up, I wanted a large leap up in sensor size.
If camera size is of a concern to you, then the Sony A55 may be a great camera for you.
Sony A55 – Some Thoughts
If you, like me, don’t know what you’re doing with cameras, here’s my 2 cents:
Pros:
- the camera is really small/light for its class
- The LCD screen [of the Sony A55] rotates in any direction (so you can take GOOD pictures of yourself!)
- the kit lens (which will be mocked by your snobby photography friends) still takes better pictures than your point and shoot
- has fancy features (like gps) that will make your snobby photography friends jealous – though you may never use them
- some of the fancy features are surprisingly within your understanding, right out of the box
- makes taking pictures more fun [with the Sony A55]!
- you can partially justify this purchase because you won’t need fancy mall portraits of the family (this camera has a timer and even remote control – sold separately but cheap)

So there you have it, the Sony A55 is a great camera for those who would like something much better than a point and shoot but aren’t willing to lug around a heavy dSLR camera.
